Roagna has farmed this Barolo site since 1989, and it's really six sites in one. Micro parcels that shift from limestone marl to blue stone as the terrain changes, worked naturally, with vines between 25 and 50 years old. Native yeasts, a pied de cuve picked ten days ahead from the same vineyard, then a 60-to-70-day submerged-cap maceration and roughly five years in neutral oak, an old-school approach that builds structure out of patience rather than wood. This is Nebbiolo with nothing borrowed: the tannin, the perfume, the length are all the vineyard's.

Winemaker Notes

Fermentation with natural yeasts in large wooden casks started by a pied de cuve picked ten days earlier from the specific vineyard. Maceration lasts for 60 - 70 days and the submerged cap is split. Aged in a neutral oak barrel for approximately five years.

Professional Ratings

95 Vinous

The 2020 Barolo Pira is a powerful, tightly wound young Barolo. Dried herbs, incense, licorice, tobacco and crushed autumn leaves add layers of nuance. This starts open with a bit of coaxing, suggesting a few years in bottle or a good bit air will do the trick. The tannins are insistent, but also polished.
