Roagna farms this Barbaresco naturally on chalky limestone, with vines running 25 to 50 years old. And then does the slow, old-fashioned thing in the cellar: indigenous yeasts, a submerged cap that can sit for 60 to 70 days, five years in large neutral botti. That's Nebbiolo built on structure rather than extraction, tannin that's fine-grained and persistent instead of loud, with the mid-palate length that only patience buys. Nothing here is borrowed from oak. It's all limestone, time, and 2017.

Winemaker Notes

Viticulture: Farmed organically. Vinification: Fermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap ("cappello sommerso") -- which can last 60-70 days. Aging: Aged for 5 years in large, neutral botti. Vineyard: One of the famed vineyards located in the commune of Neive. Same vineyard as Bruno Giacosa's "Santo Stefano di Neive".

This deceptively mid-weight Barbaresco just needs time to be at its best. I especially admire its inne
