Winemaker Notes

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Toscana is the principal wine of Poliziano. Revered by nobility through the centuries, Vino Nobile was often hailed as "the wine of kings." Today, Vino Noble is still considered to be special, thanks to the Prugnolo Gentile clone of Sangiovese that is grown in the Montepulciano area. Poliziano uses 85% Prugnolo Gentile in their blend, along with two traditional Tuscan varieties, Colorino and Canaiolo, and a bit of Merlot. The complementary varieties add color, depth, and complexity to the elegance of the Sangiovese.

Professional Ratings

94 Vinous

The 2021 Nobile di Montepulciano is a classy effort, dusty and floral with a bouquet of dried flowers, stone dust, cedary spices and black cherries. This tapers off classically dry and crisp, leaving a web of fine tannins and a pleasantly bitter tinge that lingers on.

92 James Suckling

A modern Vino Nobile with dark chocolate and some plush spices. Aromas of plums, roasted red peppers, berries and pine cones follow through to a tight, medium- to full-bodied palate. This is firm and long. From organically grown grapes. Drink from 2025.

Azienda Agricola Poliziano is located in the heart of the Montepulciano zone in southern Tuscany. Founded in 1961 by Dino Carletti, the estate was only 54 acres. Today it has grown to 420 organically farmed acres. The estate's varied soils divide it into important sections: Valiano, Lama, Casale, Pozzi, Caggiole, and Asinone. The latter two produce the estate's most prized single-vineyard wines. Asinone, first released in 1983 as Vigna Asinone Riserva, has evolved into the estate's crown jewel, winning Tre Bicchieri as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG "Asinone."
