About the Producer

For thousands of years, the Walla Walla River surged down the basalt-carved slopes of the Blue Mountains, breaking and stripping pieces from the mountainside on its dramatic descent. By the time it reached the basin below, rough rocks had been tumbled into remarkably smooth, round cobblestones. These stones left behind a polished landscape of deep basalt that shifted the river’s course and, over time, became the defining element of the terrain. Today, we call this The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater. Each vineyard here is shaped by the unique collection of stones the river left behind, producing wines of unparalleled nuance, complexity, and depth. No other name would do. Critics like Harvey Steiman of Wine Spectator have called it “perhaps America’s most distinctive example of terroir.” …we invite you to discover this land of rugged elegance for yourself. Critics like Harvey Steiman of Wine Spectator have called it “perhaps America’s most distinctive example of terroir.” “The Rocks District is unique as an AVA within the United States in that it was defined most fundamentally by soil.” PÁŠXA is more than just a name or a wine; it’s a celebration of the land’s history, its original people, and the natural elements that continue to make it a place of exceptional bounty. The name “PÁŠXA” (pronounced “PAH-sha”) pays tribute to the original inhabitants of this land. Long before European settlers etched the name “Walla Walla” onto their maps, this fertile valley was a vibrant hub and welcoming winter village for the Cayuse and Walla Walla people. They called this land Pášxapa, which translates to “the place of the Balsamroot Sunflower,” due to the hearty, beautiful flowers that blanketed the valley in the warm months. The natural beauty of the land has always defined this region, and we honor that with the name PÁŠXA, and the Balsam Root Sunflower embossed on each of our hand-affixed labels. The name “PÁŠXA” (pronounced “PAH-sha”) pays tribute to the original inhabitants of this land.
