Six varieties off organically farmed Adelaide Hills sites, red clay and clay loams over granite, limestone, and quartz, vines averaging fifty years, and Ochota Barrels blends them into something that drinks like a bright herbal tea. Gewurztraminer brings the florals, Pinot Meunier the savory depth: lavender, rose, lemon balm, thyme, bay, rosemary, all of it moving easily from nose to mid-palate on playful acidity. Gentle wine, but never sleepy.
Tasting Notes
A bright, fresh, herbal tea of a wine. Gewurztraminer provides beautiful florals, and herbal Pinot Meunier adds a savory depth. Aromas of lavender, rose, lemon balm, thyme, bay leaves, and rosemary move with ease from the nose to the palate. So gentle, but the acidity is playful. What a delight.
About the Producer
The Ochota [Oh-ko-ta] Barrels tale began on a surf trip, late in 2000 along the Mexican west coast in a Volkswagen campervan. In their final destination after traveling some of the world’s best wine and surf regions, Taras and Amber Ochota conceived the idea to make super premium wines back home in South Australia. The concept was to concentrate on the zenith variety of McLaren Vale (Grenache) and the Barossa Valley (Shiraz), find an exceptional old vineyard site in each region and create plush, small batch, single vineyard wines.
