Domaine La Luminaille sits in the Rasteau quartier called "la lumière," named for the way olive leaves glow under a full moon, and Julie Paolucci is the fifth generation of her family farming there. The vines behind this bottling went in the ground 80 years ago at 330 meters on galets roulés. Grenache leads at 60%, with Carignan and a splash of Syrah/Mourvèdre, fermented in cement and then nine months in a 1,000-liter clay jar, which keeps the fruit lit up and the mid-palate savory rather than sweet. Named for garance, the local herb that yields a deep red dye. 80 years of vine memory, and not a stick of new oak in sight.
