Fichet is a Meursault man by trade, but hail has a way of rearranging a grower's plans. In recent years he's gone looking for overperforming village terroirs across the Côte de Beaune, betting that spreading the risk means something survives each vintage. This 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet comes off clay-limestone, and it shows in the structure: Chardonnay with real spine under the flesh, minerality running straight through the mid-palate. Insurance policies rarely taste this good.

Tasting Notes

In recent years, Fichet has been among the Cotes de Beaune growers that have suffered Mother Nature's many blows, most notably of which is hail. He has sought out overperforming villages terroirs in an effort to diversify his lineup with the idea that some terroirs will be spared her continuous cruelty.

About the Producer

A noble terroir has reclaimed its birthright. Once esteemed above all other Burgundy villages for its white wines, Meursault fell from grace in the late 19th century—despite having a greater diversity of superb Chardonnay soils than any other place in Burgundy, and possibly any other spot on earth. Today, Meursault is back on top, and a new generation of winemakers is capitalizing on its diverse soils to make some of Burgundy’s most exciting white wines.
