Sixteen generations on the hill of Hermitage will teach you a few things. Chiefly that this wine is assembled, not made: Rocoules for backbone and aging potential, with L'Hermite, Péléat, and Maison Blanche each answering for structure, aromatics, and balance. Predominantly Marsanne with about 20% Roussanne, it carries the weight and quiet mineral tension the appellation is named for, the mid-palate broad but never loose. The Chave family has been at this since 1481. The blend is the point.
Winemaker Notes
Predominantly Marsanne with around 20% Roussanne, the Hermitage Blanc is a blend from several different vineyards: Rocoules, Hermite, Péléat, and Maison Blanche. Each vineyard has a distinctive geological profile and as a result each plays a particular role in the overall expression of the wine.The wine is fermented entirely in mostly neutral oak barrels and ages in oak for two years before release.
Tasting Notes
Composed predominantly of Marsanne (about 80–85%) with Roussanne (15–20%), the blend drawn from several historic parcels on the Hermitage hill—Rocoules, Péléat, L’Hermite, and Maison Blanche—each contributing a distinct element of structure, aromatics, and balance. Rocoules provides much of the backbone and aging potential, while Péléat adds finesse and complexity, L’Hermite contributes aromatic lift and precision, and Maison Blanche brings texture and freshness. Fermentation takes place primarily in neutral oak barrels, followed by approximately two years of aging in oak to integrate the wine while preserving mineral character and purity of fruit. Produced in limited quantities, Hermitage Blanc is built for longevity, combining richness, structure, and remarkable aging potential.
