In 1891, Henri Brunier handed his son Hippolyte a parcel of La Crau that everyone agreed was uncultivable. Hippolyte planted vines on the stony plateau anyway, and Vieux Télégraphe has been one of France's great estates ever since. This 2015 Southern Rhône Grenache blend, from organically farmed fruit, carries that plateau in its structure: warm, generous, built on a mid-palate with real grip underneath. The estate knows what these stones are worth. In 2022 a hailstorm and tornado took the entire La Crau crop, and rather than compromise, they made none at all.
About the Producer
Since 1891, Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe has stood among France’s great wine estates. In Bédarrides, within the celebrated south-eastern corner of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Henri Brunier gifted his son Hippolyte a parcel of La Crau land, then deemed uncultivable. Undeterred, Hippolyte planted vines on this historic plateau, whose roots trace back to the 14th century. Jules, his son, expanded the estate and named it “Vieux Télégraphe”, honoring the optical telegraph once installed there.
