Professional Ratings

100 Jeb Dunnuck

"From vines planted to 10 x 4 spacing in 2000, and biodynamically farmed, the 2022 Tempranillo Impulsivo makes one think of Ribera Del Duero in its intensity and richness of balsamic black berry and passionfruit. More new oak is applied (40% new French) for 18 months, which accentuates the inherent tension of the wine™s texture and length. The drinking window is long, now through 2042."

95 James Suckling

"Very expressive and savory, this offers wild berries, plum skins, crushed coffee beans, wet forest floor and hints of raw mushrooms. It™s full-bodied, meaty and structured yet layered with delicious fruit, the mineral freshness adding vibrancy and energy. Firm and tightly packed in the finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try from 2029."

95 Vinous

"Peppery and dusty in character, the 2022 Impulsivo wafts up with a brooding mix of crushed black raspberry, dried roses and graphite. Deceptively approachable at first, it envelops the palate with depths of red and black fruit offset by hints of sour citrus as a collection of edgy tannins mounts toward the close. Its structure defines the finish, incredibly long and staining, with steely mineral tones and primary concentration that add chewy persistence."

93 Wine Advocate

"The 2022 Tempranillo Impulsivo comes from biodynamically farmed vines planted in 2000 and was matured for 18 months in 40% new French oak. It has inviting scents of boysenberry, black cherry, licorice, woodsmoke and floral perfume. Full-bodied, it floods the mouth with dark, iron-laced fruit. It's framed by persistent, grippy tannins and fresh acidity and has a long, savory finish. It should be long lived in the cellar. 393 cases were made."

About the Producer

Among the most compelling examples of Syrah outside France are made in the most unlikely of places—on the Oregon side of the Walla Walla Valley—and by a Frenchman, born not in the Rhône, but in Champagne. The winemaker is Christophe Baron, who discovered an area in the valley littered with cobblestones. Astonished by the Châteauneuf-like stones, he instinctively knew he could make great wine here. He planted the first commercially successful vineyards in these stones, including Coccinelle Vineyard in 1996.
