Schiava is Alto Adige's native red, and until the 1970s it was the reason this alpine corner was known for reds rather than whites at all. Lageder's 2023 comes in ruby with a purple shimmer, violets and white pepper on the nose, light- to medium-bodied and dry with a juicy, soft mid-palate. A red built on lift instead of weight. Proof that lighter isn't lesser.
Winemaker Notes
Schiava is a grape variety native to Alto Adige that, until the 1970s, was central to winemaking in the region. For this reason, the region was more well-known for its red wines than white wines for decades. Historically known for producing light-bodied and lighter-colored wines, in recent years Lageder has started experimenting with Schiava to push the boundaries of the varietal's potential, creating wines with increased levels of concentration, weight and structure, while maintaining balance, elegance and freshness.

About the Producer
Driving north from Verona, in northeastern Italy, the autostrada enters the Alpine valley, lined with steep glacial walls. After passing Trento, it reaches Trentino–Alto Adige's wine and apple-growing district, with vines and orchards covering the valley floor. Near the border of Alto Adige or Südtirol, the charming village of Magrè appears. Though it seems like a quiet, well-preserved town, Magrè hosts the headquarters of Alois Lageder winery, one of Italy's top producers.
