Abbazia di Novacella farms this Lagrein in Bolzano's Quirein district, where sand, clay, and eroded quartzite porphyry sit between 850 and 1150 feet, a site that gives the grape its dark color without the heaviness. Stainless steel fermentation and malolactic keep everything transparent: mid-palate weight, fine grippy tannin, and fruit that stays cool and unadorned. Practicing organic, picked mid-October, nothing dressed up. Lagrein tastes like the alpine valley it comes from.

Professional Ratings

91 Vinous

"The 2024 Lagrein is a total pleasure on the nose, with a vibrant burst of crushed blackberries, lavender and stone dust forming its inviting bouquet. There are depths of dark red and blue fruits within, all complemented by an air of inner violet florals. Long and youthfully tense yet still lively, the 2024 leaves the palate thirsting for more as a subtle tart berry twang pinches at the cheeks."

90 James Suckling

"A fruity wine with blackberries, black pepper and pleasant leafy aromas. Refreshing and juicy, it has medium body and good tannins. Polished finish. Drink now."
