Winemaker Notes

2023 was a mixed year for Brunello growers, marked by wet and hot weather spells and lower yields. However, the potential for high quality wines, especially those based on Nebbiolo, remains strong. The wines have elegance and softness that make them fun to drink, and in the case of this Rosso, a juicy character that is hard to resist. Altesino is the master of elegance, and it shows in their 2023. The alcohol content has been reduced to 13.7%, and the red fruit character is more pronounced, resulting in a much more vibrant style that is food friendly and, dare I say, more authentic Rosso than the warmer, heavier 2022s. Professional Ratings

93 James Suckling

Tasted: Dec 2024. A graceful nose of menthol, red currants, orange peel and herbs. The attack is medium-bodied with ripe, velvety, silky tannins, lifted acidity and a savory finish. Precise, with a crunchy style at the end and a lively aftertaste. Drinkable now, but can age.

About the Producer

Near the end of 2002, Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, owner of nearby Tenuta Caparzo, purchased the Altesino winery. Today's winemaking team, led by Simone Giunti and Alessandro Ciacci, is firmly committed to maintaining Altesino’s hard-earned reputation as a Montalcino institution and a global leader in innovative winemaking. Amid the eastern hills of Montalcino near Siena in central Tuscany, stands the magnificently elegant 14th century-built Palazzo Altesi, home to the Altesino winery and a marvelous resort.
