Winemaker Notes

Deep purple in color, this wine has aromas of black cherries and secondary notes of cassis, mint, and blueberries. This rich wine is well balanced by its velvety tannins, vibrant acidity, and long finish. Pair this wine with braised ribs, gremolatas, mushroom risotto, and ossobucco.

Professional Ratings

93 James Suckling

Tasted: Sep 2023. This has intense and fragrant aromas of poached plums, vanilla, cedar, paprika and masala chai here. It’s full-bodied and toasty, with very fine and powdery tannins. Spicy. Let the wood settle. Try in 2025.

About the Producer

Poggio Scalette takes its name from the landscape, which is characterized by dry, stone walls supporting terraces on which the vineyards and olive groves are planted. From a distance the impression is of a series of stairs climbing the slopes of Greve. After the death of its previous owner, Poggio Scalette remained abandoned for years until Vittorio Fiore, one of Italy’s most famed winemakers, discovered the property in 1991 with his wife, Adriana. In 1996, 42 additional acres of land became available, enabling them to expand.
