Seventh-generation Zárate has been translating the weathered granite slopes of Vale do Salinas into Albariño since 1707. This 2023 carries that lineage in its minerality and structure. Rias Baixas' intrinsic marriage of Atlantic influence and stone-driven fruit finds its truest expression here: a wine that tastes like terroir memory, not accident.
Winemaker Notes
Viticulture: organic and biodynamic. Vinification: Vinification takes place in stainless steel with wild yeast. The wine is aged on the gross lees for 3-6 months and then on the fine lees for 6 months. Production: Average production is 220 cases. Vineyard: Balado is sourced from two parcels of ungrafted vines planted in 1950 within a granite-walled vineyard.
About the Producer
When Galicia’s Rías Baixas officially attained appellation status in 1988, there were only thirty wineries, and almost all the wine they produced was consumed locally. In the years since then, Rías Baixas has exploded and is now home to six times as many producers. Its growth has been driven by the worldwide thirst for the bracingly fresh and aromatic white wines made from the region’s signature grape, Albariño. Most producers are content with making refreshing wines —for drinking young— to meet that demand.
