About the Producer

Since 1865, the spirit of Mommessin has consisted of a Beaujolais soul and a Burgundian heart that define a style that is fruity, powerful and very close to its roots.  The Mommessin spirit stands out for the alliance of two winegrowing regions - Burgundy and the Beaujolais, two cultures that make our wines distinctive and appealing. Mommessin has maintained privileged partnerships with estates since its creation in 1865. All of them share the same values as Mommessin and help contribute to its excellence. Such an approach is unique within the region. The revival of Beaujolais wines will require the evolution of the style of the wines and the rediscovery of all of the potential of this exceptional terroir which allows for:   - More fruit and elegance due to changes in vinification methods - More spiciness and complexity due to greater thought given to the grape varieties - More aromas and flavors and better vivacity through the creation of a new category of wines Mommessin House is now located in the heart of Beaujolais, at the foot of Mont Brouilly. The Beaujolais region is a symphony of landscapes, which pleases the eye and the senses. On this place of exception, Mommessin made a king of the Gamay varietal, which unveils its rich and varied taste expressions. This varietal contributes to the assertion of a genuine Beaujolais terroir. The average altitude is combined with a northern climate, particularly favorable, and the vine is rooted in the heart of the rock. As a well-demarcated terroir, Beaujolais is closely identified with the Gamay grape that reigns here in undisputed master. Because the grapes themselves hold the key to the wealth of our wines, respect for the fruit is the founding principle that holds sway over each step of our winemaking. Our House chose to minimize human intervention and to ban chemical processes. Humans are in the service of the grapes. The subsoils are mainly made of a very old decomposed granite rock, similar to that of the Alps and it is perfectly suited to this lively varietal called Gamay. The world's Gamay cartography indicates that Beaujolais is the undisputed kingdom of this varietal. The soils in this region are diverse and varied: alluvial deposits in the East, limestone influences combined with iron and shale in the North. The terroir is wide, the nuances are infinite, yet the most symbolic is the granite, on which the varietal Gamay is thriving with fervor. More than just a winemaker, Mommessin's “viniculteur”,  a neologism created from the words vinificateur (winemaker) and viticulteur (winegrower), illustrates the House of Mommessin’s involvement as much in the vineyards, where wine begins, as in the cellars. Their “viniculteur” plays a major role in determining the style of the wines because he masters every aspect of them, from the vineyard to the winery.    Florent has been passionate about vines and wines since he was a young boy and has always been immersed in the world of viticulture.
