About the Producer

Bontzu Cellars tells a story rooted in old-world heritage and new-world craft. Romanian-born Sorin came to the United States in 2000, settling first in Seattle before making his way to Walla Walla Community College's Enology and Viticulture Program. He graduated in 2014 and opened Bontzu Cellars the same year. The winery's name honors his grandfather, Jon Nicholas—a cobbler and shoemaker who was the head of the family for more than 60 years. "Strong-willed, stubborn sometimes, he never backed down on his principles or work ethic," Sorin recalls. The wines reflect those values: terroir-driven and vineyard-designated Rhône and Bordeaux varietals made with traditional European techniques adapted to Washington's distinctive terroir. Bontzu is a family winery in the truest sense—producing wines that carry forward memory, heritage, and a deep respect for the land.
