Thursday Tasting — Sangiovese | September 10
Six wines. One grape. Six hillsides that refuse to agree on what it tastes like.
Sangiovese is Tuscany's grape, and tonight is a tour of how much the same vine changes from one hill to the next. We open in Chianti Classico with two villages: Castellare's bird-label Chianti from a natural amphitheater above Castellina, then Castello di Volpaia, an entire eleventh-century village above Radda making organic Sangiovese at two thousand feet. Then south to Montalcino for two Rossos from the north side of the hill, a mile or two apart: La Gerla, founded on land bought from the Biondi-Santi family, and Baricci, farming the Montosoli slope since 1968. The two aged wines close it. Boscarelli's 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, eight years old and drinking right in its window, and Caparzo's 2018 Brunello, blended from vineyards in every corner of the appellation and released five years after harvest. Two bonus bottles pour by the ounce alongside the flight: Bartolo Mascarello's 2020 Barolo, from the most traditional cellar in Piedmont, and Antinori's 2020 Tignanello, the wine that invented the Super Tuscan. No reservation needed. Just show up.
