Thursday Tasting — Ferragosto | August 13
Twelve wines. One peninsula. The day Italy closes shop and heads to the beach.
Ferragosto is August 15, the day the whole of Italy stops working and heads for the coast. Offices close, cities empty, and lunch runs until it turns into dinner. We are getting there two days early, and since there is no single Ferragosto wine, because there is no single Italy, we poured twelve and pointed them down the map.
Bubbles from Emilia and the Prosecco hills to start, whites from the Veneto down to Calabria's Ionian coast and back up to Piedmont, a Sicilian rosé of Nerello Mascalese, then the reds: a pale mountain Schiava from Alto Adige, Verduno's peppery Pelaverga, Tuscany twice, Nebbiolo from Monforte d'Alba, and the last glass an Aglianico out of the volcanic hills east of Vesuvius. Chilled, unhurried, and meant to be drunk in company. No reservation needed. Just show up.
